Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Trauma Assistance Program-International (TAP-IN)
Compassion into Action

Trauma First Aid for individuals impacted by the California Fires
Targeted Rapid Response

1. Who is eligible for these services?
Anyone impacted by the California fires is eligible for our services. This program is not income-based and serves individuals of all ages, from childhood throughout the lifespan.

2. What services are being offered?
We are offering five pro bono therapy sessions for individuals affected by the fires. These sessions are provided by volunteer therapists from the Trauma Assistance Program.

3. When do the services begin?
Services are available immediately. Providers are ready to offer support as soon as clients reach out.

4. Why is this program important?
Research shows that early intervention after a traumatic event can help prevent long-term effects such as post-traumatic stress (PTS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These interventions focus on calming and re-regulating the nervous system during the critical early period after trauma.

5. Where will services be provided?
Services will be provided:
In person (when possible, depending on location).

Virtually for those unable to access in-person sessions.

6. Are therapists compensated?
Yes, Thanks to generous donations, TAP-IN has a dedicated fund specifically for the California fires. Each therapist will receive a stipend of $75 per session for a total of five sessions, equaling $375 per client. Some therapists may choose to waive this stipend, while others may use it to offset their costs.

7. How can I volunteer as a therapist?
There are two ways to volunteer:
Visit www.traumaassistanceprogram-international.org and fill out the volunteer form under the "More" section. Email Julie at [email protected] to express your interest.

8. How will I know if I have a client to assist?
Once you register as a volunteer, when a client requested services, you will receive an email from Julie Probus-Schad to confirm your availability. After accepting a referral, you will receive the client's name and decide whether to accept the stipend. To claim the stipend, simply submit an invoice after completing the sessions (up to $375 per client).

9. What protocols should I follow during initial sessions?
During the initial phase, we recommend using Recent Traumatic Events Protocols, including:
Tapping Through the Trauma. The Modified Protocol for Recent Traumatic Events (designed to address memories within the first 3 months after the event). If you need access to the latest modified protocol, email Julie at [email protected], and she will send it promptly.

10. Will attachment-focused EMDR be available later?
Yes, TAP-IN envisions a phased approach.
Initial Phase: Stabilization and desensitization using Recent Traumatic Events Protocols.
Next Phase: Attachment-Focused EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for individuals requiring further support beyond the initial sessions.

11. Can I provide services if I am out of state?
Yes! Therapists who are licensed in states outside California can still volunteer, provided they are legally allowed to provide telehealth services to clients located in California.
Trauma First Aid can be offered by anyone and is not EMDR.
Please check your licensing board’s telehealth regulations to ensure compliance before offering services.
If you have questions or need guidance on this matter, please contact Julie at [email protected]
For more information or additional questions, please contact us at www.traumaassistanceprogram-international.org or email [email protected].

12. How do potential clients access care?
Clients referred to TAP-IN will be matched with volunteer therapists. Potential clients should email [email protected] to request a referral. Once matched, the therapist assumes all responsibility for providing care.
TAP-IN serves as a referral source, connecting licensed volunteer therapists with individuals in need of trauma first aid.
